Anonymous Asked:
I don't know who Ayn Rand is. Should I change that or just let it lie?

My answer:

raptorific:

Imagine the baby that would result from a night of passion between Ebenezer Scrooge (before the spirits changed his ways) and Mr. Krabs from Spongebob. Now imagine that baby grew up and married the baby that would result from a night of passion between Yzma from the Emperor’s New Groove and Mr. Burns from the Simpsons. Now imagine the newlyweds had a baby of their own, and that baby was raised aboard a Ferengi Starship, where she was tutored in empathy and compassion by Lord Voldemort. Now imagine that baby grew up and someone told her that any opinions she might have or conclusions she might reach are based on objective logic and reason, and that anyone who disagrees with her is simply being irrational. Now multiply that person’s greed and heartlessness by 100 and you’ll begin to see something that comes close to resembling Ayn Rand.

This is not correct, at all. Ayn Rand is the product of an extreme communist revolution in Russia that was run by corrupt government officials. She watched her entire life be overtaken by those who abused the class systems, she watched as the same government who lambasted anyone middle class or higher for being greedy pad their own pockets in their own silk-lined coats. She escaped as a refugee. Her objectivism is not greedy or heartless, it is born out of a desire to trust only yourself. When Ayn spoke of “moochers” she was speaking of the same leeches who fill their bank accounts with the efforts of the underpaid lower class, she was speaking of anyone who would take someone else’s work and claim it as their own.

Don’t let the Republican’s corruption of her work fool you. Look into her historical context and understand that she would NOT agree with Paul Ryan or any of the talking puppets that run any section of our government, regardless of party line. The continuous parroting of Ayn Rand’s writings by the Right is just another example of pick-and-choose cultural appropriation.

It also bears noting that Ayn Rand was also a very outspoken atheist so suck on that, Sarah Palin.

it’s finally forreal forreal finished! my first ever zine! :D
Death Valley: Or, How to Not Kill Yourself in Less Than Ten Days is a reflection of what i learned and how i survived a particularly dark night of the soul. it’s an untangling of a suicidal ideation beyond tropes of “hormonal imbalance” or “lack of exercise”, into questions of race and Blackness and memory and displacement and belonging, and what all goes in to be a Black person in the world who chooses to live.
it’s suuuuuuuper personal and i am both scared and excited about the whole thing. just. aaaaaa. all the feels.
you can purchase it here at my paypal - $2 for the zine, plus $1 for shipping and handling.

Yeeeesss! So excited to read it <3
